Por primera vez en el Centro de Rehabilitación de San Quentin se celebraron a madres de algunos prisioneros, con motivo de la festividad del Día de las Madres. Sorprendiéndolas con una serenata, danza Azteca y un servicio católico.
En la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, se ofició una misa bilingüe dirigido por Salvatore Cordileone, Arzobispo de San Francisco y contando con la asistencia de aproximadamente 200 personas entre residentes, oficiales y visitantes.
El Arzobispo mencionó que la dedicación del Día de las Madres celebrado el segundo día del mes de mayo, marca la mitad de los 50 días desde la resurrección de Jesucristo hasta el descenso del Espíritu Santo a los apóstoles en la festividad de Pentecostés.
“Nuestras madres, desde que nacemos nos dan mucha atención y las madres sufren por cuidarnos. Es siempre una alegría el honrar a una madre”, dijo el Arzobispo Cordileone y agregó. “Para mí es un honor y regocijo, ver a las madres aquí. Es una señal de esperanza, en la que podemos estar juntos en amor, solidarios y de esta manera construir una sociedad más humana”.
A la llegada de las invitadas, el grupo de músicos encarcelados que participan en la celebración de las misas en la iglesia católica, tocaron las mañanitas en dedicatoria a las mamas presentes y después el grupo de danza Cuāuhocēloti dio un espectáculo de danza tradicional.
Durante la misa se explicó que, los primeros tres domingos de pascua se enfoca en la reflexión del misterio sobre la “resurrección de Cristo” y que los últimos tres domingos, en la llegada del Espíritu Santo en la festividad de Pentecostés, “la fe no solo es para nosotros, es de compartir las buena nuevas a todas las personas de todas las razas o idiomas”, agregó el Arzobispo.
Algunas madres comentaron , que estar aquí por primera vez en compañía de su ser querido les genera sentimientos encontrados y mucha alegría, además de agradecer al Arzobispo por dirigir la misa.
Lorena Soriano, quien radica en la ciudad de Morgan Hill opinó que no se imaginaba tanta libertad dentro de éste lugar, “fue un día feliz y me siento contenta, me da gusto de ver a mi hijo y por la misma, pero a la misma vez me va a dar tristeza cuando me vaya”.
Chris Combs residente de SQ, agradeció esta oportunidad en donde se permite invitar a las madres, y para él éste evento lo hizo sentir en libertad.
El Padre Gorge Williams al final del servicio, agradeció la presencia de los invitados y pidió a los encarcelados entregar una rosa del podio a su respectivas madres, como gesto de amor y apreciación. “Sentí tan bonito cuando mi hijo me entrego esta flor, porque es mi color favorito”, expresó la Sra. Soriano.
Ana Medrano, otra madre procedente de San Francisco, agradeció el estar con su hijo Nelson (apellido). Siendo un día muy especial para ella y hace una invitación a todos los residentes creyentes, que sigan teniendo fe y de aprovechar al máximo las oportunidades que ofrece esta prisión.

Mothers join sons to celebrate Catholic Mass
A large crowd of incarcerated people gathered at San Quentin Catholic chapel to celebrated “El Dia de las Madres” (Mother’s Day).
This event commenced with the performance by the incarcerated Aztec dancers at the main entrance of the prison. Men danced to the beats of a drum as each one of them lighten traditional Mexican cultural, the crowd applauded to the jigs of a thumps.
While the chapel was pack with over 200 attendees, the residents were able to have share this special moment with their mothers, sitting next to them for the first time during a mass at the catholic chapel. An event that is not common inside prison.
A bilingual (English/Spanish) mass was conducted with the presence of archbishop of San Francisco Salvatore Cordileone, acknowledge everyone and gave a special welcome to the mothers and blessed all the mothers of the world.
For some incarcerated men Mother’s Day is not fulfilling without the presence of one’s mother. This day was extra special for those mothers who were able to attend. A rare opportunity that is not given at other institutions.
“For me is and honor and joy to see the mothers in here is a sign of hope, that we can come together in love, in solidarity and this way build a more humane society,” Salvatore Cordileone SF Archbishop.
“I commend the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center for event like these to help the men here improve their lives so that they may live in a way that they can give glory to God.”
Linda Combs felt appreciative towards what the Archbishop was talking about in regards to the importance of a mothers love and her interpretation of love is spending time with the ones we love. Her son Chris Combs is scheduled to be release in six months.
She added, “I pray for peace for everyone here.”
Mr. Combs was overwhelmed with emotions having his mother with him during this day. It made him proud to be able to give his mother a hug during mother’s day while he is in custody. According to him, his mother is the closest thing to feeling as if he’s still free in the community and in not in prison. He hopes that this event as a pilot program should be replicated across CDCR.
As the festivity progressed, a musical group composed by the incarcerated pilgrim played the traditional serenaded to the attendee mothers.
Father Gorge Williams asked each incarcerated men to go the altar and pick a rose from the bouquet to present to their mothers with a redrose. A gesture of love and appreciation to their mothers. When Mass ended visitors were instructed to line up for a piece of cake and juice.
“It is an honor to have all these mothers here for mother’s days,” said SQRC Father George Williams. He worked hard to make this event to be possible. Some of the mothers said they felt blessed to be able to sit next to their sons during such a traditional day.
“I feel blessed to be with my son Nelson, and I felt a lot spirituality attending to the mass. It is my second time here in San Quentin. I hope to have more opportunities to spend with my son, that would be a blessing,” said Ana Medrano from San Francisco.
