Since the 2021 seasons of all sports at The Q have been suspended due to COVID and the variants that followed, the commissioner and coaches have been innovating and finding ways to keep sports relevant at the prison.
SQ has been partially open since May 5 and residents have been allowed to partake in some activities on the yard and throughout the prison. Although there are restrictions, coaches have figured out on their own how to make it happen.
Normally, the head coach over all sports programs at the prison, K. Bhatt, would organize events and challenges with the outside people who used to frequent the prison. There used to be championship games with winning prizes such as granola bars, sodas and candy.
Nowadays, the commissioner of the basketball program, baseball coaches and football coaches have developed intramural leagues for basketball and football on their own, while baseball coaches have improvised the season with in-house team scrimmages.
The intramural leagues have been going on for several months and all the SQ residents who love sports have enjoyed those days of being able to watch sports happen at SQ again.
Surrounded by a group of passionate and talented coaches, Commissioner Ish and other committee members have kept the hoop dreams alive for the players, while baseball manager Will is keeping America’s favorite pastime rocking on. New Madden Football head coach Bryant is covering the task since Sleep left, giving the players an opportunity to get some football in play.
To be able to come out to the yard and play some good competitive ball for some awesome coaches is a commendable blessing. It takes a true passion for the sport for someone to continue their drive and determination for the sport. And that’s what makes all of the SQ resident coaches rock stars.
