I Remember You

October 5, 2018 by San Quentin News Contributor

I Remember You

When

I stop and store with a gleam

In my eye wondering why so young

You had to die.

I Remember You

When the canons roared with

Fire and steel, the lead flew

Straight, and true, as you took

The hill, like a soldiers do.

I Remember You

Whenever I go-I hear the

Whisper of wind calling your

Name-saying you were brave,

And strong, filled with courage

Not seeking fame.

I Remember You

As you traveled far, leaving

Home, and hearth so all alone,

With head held high, with a last

Good-by.

I remember you

You are my friend and my

Hero-if you were here I

Would tell you so. You gave

Your all to freedoms call,

Alas, I cry as I kneel, and

Feel, your name on a

Cold cold wall.
