Wardens who made a difference

May 3, 2022 by San Quentin News

Clinton T. Duffy was a progressive warden long before “progress”
was considered a good thing. He started the San Quentin News in
1940, building on its predecessor, Wall City News.
Warden Robert L. Ayers resurrected
the San Quentin News after a nearly
two-decade hiatus in an effort to curb
the prison rumor mill.
Ron Davis was the warden who made the San Quentin News available in all 36 California prisons, and it was during his
administration that the first Wall City Magazine was printed.
Ron Broomfield, San Quentin’s current warden, has expanded the
growth of the San Quentin News and the Journalism Guild’s into
Folsom Women’s Facility.
