3-D style portrays character standing on his own

Jack Anderwald, started drawing when he was 10. Now as an adult he decided to take it to a whole different level by incorporating his own 3-D style. The artist pointed out how he goes out of his way by carefully cutting out card stock into the shapes of every character that he creates. He wants his characters to stand on their own.
“I kind of visualized how I want it to look before I assemble them all together until I am happy with my own product,” said Anderwald, who is incarcerated at San Quentin.
It seems like all artists have their favorite character. Anderwald proudly points out that Mickey Mouse is the leader of the pack. He said, “Everyone knows Mickey worldwide.”
According to the artist, all his children grew up with Disney, and they went to Disneyland at least three times a year.
We have Marvin the Martian, where we can see him positioned like he is plotting what he is going to blow up next. Marvin stands in the middle of a table with those mischievous eyes ready to make his next move.
Mickey on the other hand brings us his famous smile. He is holding a flower while a butterfly sniffed them out. The idea is that he is gifting someone special in his life with a token of love or appreciation.
We also have a replicate of Jack the Skeleton with what would be his fictional daughter, Sally who is hugging him under the moon surrounded by bats.
Anderwald confessed that Jack is his second favorite character. He even tattooed him on his shoulders. He said that his daughter called him the Pumpkin King for his love of Halloween.
Anderwald said his biggest challenges have been in creating the perfect replica from multiple Disney characters.
“When you think of Disney, it puts a smile on your face,” said Anderwald. “I have seen other prisoners do duplicates of these character which are not true to form.”
Anderwald feels blessed when he receives positive feedback from those who see his work. He once drew a Mickey Mouse for a friend’s daughter who was very happy that she have received her own Mickey.
