The basketball rivalry between the San Quentin Warriors and Town Boogie continued on May 4th.
The teams battled in front of a full house in spite of the rain as Town Boogie’s captain, Jeffery “Free” Gary, and his team arrived from outside to fellowship with the Warriors.
As the game started Town Boogie scored first.
The warriors then failed to capitalize even though Darius “DP” Poole stole the ball.
Darell “Sonic” Pimpton Jr. scored two after snatching the ball.
Town Boogie’s Sam Permutt then matched Pimpton’s score.
The Warriors Velteese “Teese” Mathis scored a bucket to tie Town Boogie and Delvon “Relly” Adams assisted Mathis by scoring two more points for the Warriors at the end of the first quarter that ended with SQ up 13-6.
Mathis was the Warriors leading scorer and spoke about how the team played.
“It’s cool to score 24. [We] could’ve played better [but] the victory was much needed [because we] lost to the green team, [and needed] to find [our] identity,” said Mathis.
The second quarter featured Adams stealing the ball and scoring two more points.
At the other end of the court Town Boogie passed the ball eight times to grab another score.
The Warriors’ Kasper then hit a deep three before Town Boogie’s Juwan Rohan stole the ball and dished to Andrew Wallace, who completed a three-point basket.
Other great plays included Pimpton helping his team with a diving save to Kasper who buried a three and followed with two more threes.
Town Boogie’s Wallace then scored three of his own and then Pimpton matched him before Permutt added two points and a freewthrow to end the first half with the Warriors leading 34-25.
At the start of the second half the Warriors’ Pimpton dropped a trey after they improved their ball rotation. George Lopez took the ball down the court and broke ankles before dishing to Pimpton. The assist kept his team in front to end the third quarter with SQRC leading 52-38.
In the fourth quarter, Permutt countered Pimpton’s shot like a heavyweight champ, but during the last seconds of the game Lopez hit the last bucket and the Warriors won because of their great defensive effort.
Permutt was Town Boogies’ leading scorer.
“It’s fun to come in. I wanted to really come back,’ said Permutt.
He then spoke of how he held himself to a higher standard and wanted to play his best against Cooper.
Permutt also said he was comfortable playing at SQRC for the second year, which helped his performance.
